Hotel Garden Istra: Our Honest Family Review After the Big Renovation

We visited Hotel Garden Istra in Katoro, just outside Umag, right after its major renovation was completed in mid-July 2026.

Four nights, self-funded, no collaboration involved.

Hotel Garden Istra: A Quick Overview

Hotel Garden Istra is part of the Plava Laguna group and sits within the Katoro resort, a few minutes drive from Umag town.

The complex includes the main hotel building plus three residence buildings right next door. We stayed in the first one, closest to the hotel.

Functionally, there wasn’t much difference between residence and hotel accommodation in our experience; you just step outside and walk a short distance to reach the main building, which was never an issue even with a stroller and a one year old.

Checking In with Kids: What to Know Before You Go

Official check-in time doesn’t always work best for families (or at least it didn’t for ours at the moment), which is exactly why we chose to arrive very early. That way we could work our arrival around our baby’s sleeping schedule.

Since we had time before check-in, we used it as an excuse for a short detour through Umag center, a quick coffee stop, and then some playtime at a lovely, spacious playground we stumbled on along the way.

Large public playground in Umag town center with swings, climbing nets, slides, and safety rubber flooring under shade trees.

It ended up being a really nice, low-key start to the trip before we headed back to the beach in front of the hotel to let the kids splash around while we waited for our room to be ready.

Early Arrival & Check-In Tip

Parking: €2/day with plenty of space across the complex.
Pre-Check-In: Always complete the pre-check-in email beforehand to save time at reception.
Avoid the 2 PM Peak: Aim to arrive either well before 2 PM or later in the afternoon.

Check-in itself was smooth, helped enormously by the pre-check-in email we received beforehand, which sped things up.

We arrived on a Thursday and waited about ten minutes, which felt very manageable. Worth flagging for other parents planning a trip in peak season: the check-in area does get noticeably busier around the official 2pm slot, and we saw this firsthand the following day (Friday), when the queue was visibly longer.

Spacious, open-concept hotel lobby lounge featuring modern green armchairs, wooden columns, potted plants, and modern light fixtures.

For the first impression, I was thrilled by how big and open everything felt. Spacious lobby and easy to navigate with a stroller.

What Wasn’t Quite Ready Yet

Since we were staying so soon after the renovation was announced complete, not everything was actually finished.

One honest note before we move on: part of why we chose Hotel Garden Istra was the promise of all those kid-friendly facilities: we wanted a calm, short getaway that still had plenty to keep the kids busy.

So it was a little disappointing to arrive and find that some of those activities weren’t quite up and running yet.

Post-Renovation Booking Rule

When booking a hotel immediately following a major renovation, verify directly with reception or reservation support which specific facilities (water slides, indoor spa, animation) are open for your exact travel dates.

The bright side was watching things come together in real time. A few facilities opened their doors before we even checked out, so the progress was there.

If you’re reading this any time after our stay, chances are everything is fully up and running by now, but it’s a good general reminder when booking any hotel that advertises a recent renovation: it’s always worth double-checking what’s actually opened for your specific dates.

The Rooms: What We Booked & How It Worked for Us

We booked the classic room for two with an extra bed, a setup that made perfect sense for our family.

Our one-year-old still co-sleeps with us, so we didn’t need the extra cot or bed most families with a baby might book.

The hotel did offer a free baby cot, which was a nice touch, but we skipped it since we knew our little one wouldn’t be sleeping in it anyway and it would’ve just eaten up floor space we didn’t have to spare.

Space and comfort

The room itself was spacious and had everything we needed. Nothing felt tight or awkward to move around in, even with a stroller, a 6-year-old’s scattered belongings, and all the extra gear that comes with traveling as a family of four (soon to be five).

Everything was spotlessly clean and felt modern throughout.

Housekeeping

One thing worth calling out specifically for parents: the cleaning staff were lovely and tidied the room daily.

If you’ve ever traveled with a baby in diapers, you know exactly why this matters.

Little extras

The bathroom came stocked with plenty of clean towels plus a few thoughtful extras: shower caps, shampoo, a small sewing kit and we were given two pairs of room slippers (adult sizes only, so we brought our own for the kids).

Balcony

Our balcony looked directly onto the hotel and, from the side, gave us a view over the pools. Overall, the room suited our needs well and gave us a genuinely comfortable stay.

Dining: Half Board for Adults, a Sweet Deal for Kids

Hotel Garden Istra offers half board for adults, breakfast and dinner, while kids get their own separate lunch program served near the kids club and water park area, away from the main hotel restaurant.

Bright modern hotel restaurant dining hall with wooden tables, white chairs, soft cylindrical lighting, and natural decor accents.

This kids lunch comes with a wristband, though it’s only available for children aged 4 to 11 (our one-year-old didn’t qualify, which is worth flagging for parents of younger children).

Kids stay in that area on their own for lunch, without parents accompanying them. Something to know in advance if your child isn’t used to that kind of independence yet.

What kids get

Beyond lunch, kids also receive free ice cream in the afternoon, served in the same area.

The lunch menu leaned toward kid-friendly meals, think chicken breast with fries, or turkey with rice and vegetables, plus drinks.

Nothing fancy, but exactly what most kids that age actually want to eat.

What adults get

Breakfast runs 7–10am, dinner 6–9pm, with soft drinks included and a selection of alcoholic options too; red and white wine, beer.

I was impressed with the variety here. Meals didn’t feel repetitive across our stay, and there were some lovely surprises leaning into local, coastal cuisine, shrimp, fish, and similar dishes.

Breakfast always had fresh pastries, eggs, and a good mix of cooked and fresh vegetables. Honestly, there was something for everyone at both meals.

There was also a separate table offering lactose and gluten-free options.

We didn’t check into it in more depth ourselves since we don’t have any allergies, but if you or your child do, the staff and reservation call center were very friendly and responsive, so I’d recommend emailing ahead with specific questions about allergies and food options before you arrive.

Family Dining Essentials

Kids Club Lunch: Free lunch and afternoon ice cream are included for kids aged 4–11 (1-year-olds do not qualify).
Dietary Needs: A dedicated table with gluten-free and lactose-free options is set up at the main buffet. Email the hotel in advance if your child has severe food allergies.

Beach & Surrounding Area: A Short, Shaded Walk

Getting to the Beach

The path from the main hotel entrance to the beach is stroller-friendly and takes about five minutes.

Point-of-view view pushing a baby stroller down a paved walking path lined with pine trees leading toward the sea.

What makes it especially pleasant is that it’s shaded the entire way.

The pine trees form a natural tunnel overhead, which was a relief during the sunniest hours of the day with a toddler in the stroller.

What the Beach Is Really Like

It’s a mix of terrain, part sand, part concrete, and honestly, that combination worked out perfectly for us.

Sun loungers and parasols setup under natural shade on a grassy slope next to a calm sea cove.

Sand is my personal favorite when traveling with kids. It keeps them endlessly entertained, digging and building, in a way pebbles or concrete just can’t match.

Without kids, I probably wouldn’t choose a sandy beach first, but with them, it was ideal.

Just a few steps from the sandy area, there’s a concrete section with free sunbeds for hotel guests, a small detail that surprised me in a good way, since not every hotel includes this.

Sheltered sea cove with calm green water, rock breakwaters, paved sunbathing terraces, and a stroller parked by sunbeds.
Dense grove of tall pine trees offering thick natural shade over a needle-covered forest floor near the beach.

I’ll be honest: the beach itself isn’t particularly spectacular to look at, but it’s compact, has enough natural shade (which matters enormously with young kids), and there’s a beach bar on-site for drinks or a quick bite.

Beach Amenities & Sunbeds

Sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers are all included at no extra cost, one less thing to plan or pay for during your stay.

Exploring Beyond the Hotel

We took a short walk to hotel Aurora, another Plava Laguna hotel nearby, which shares a similar beach setup minus the sandy stretch.

We’d originally planned to take the tourist train into Umag center, but our 6-year-old was so attached to the nightly mini disco that we didn’t want her to miss it, so that trip got skipped.

Kid & Adult Facilities

Toddler Pool & Sun Safety

Unheated Water: Keep a close eye on young toddlers in the unheated pools. Take regular breaks if lips start turning cool or bluish.
Natural Pool Shade: The main pool closest to the hotel building gets partial shade after 2 PM, making it safer for afternoon swimming without direct sun exposure.

Pools & waterpark

During our stay, the pools in the complex near the main building were fully open and functioning, as was the splash zone further out near the kids club (the same area where lunch is served). The one piece still missing were the waterpark slides around the splash zone.

They were mid-installation while we were there. I checked the hotel’s website recently, and they appear to be fully operational now, so the fun factor has only grown since our visit.
Both my 6-year-old and 1-year-old loved their pool time.

The water runs a bit cold since the pools aren’t heated, but with how hot it was outside, it worked out fine for the older one. For the baby, I made sure to take regular breaks between swims, since her lips would occasionally turn a bit bluish, something I’d recommend any parent of a young toddler watch for, unheated pool or not.

One detail I really appreciated: the pool closest to the hotel building becomes partially shaded after 2pm. As both a mom and a preschool teacher, I generally avoid sun exposure for kids between 11am and 5pm, so this made a real difference.

It meant my 6-year-old, who’s dropped her afternoon nap and is always eager to swim, could head to the pool shortly after lunch without me worrying about sun exposure.

Kids programs & playground

The hotel runs several animation programs throughout the day. Pepi Club, for kids aged 4 and up, lets children stay independently with the animation team, and my daughter was happy with the activities on offer.

There’s also a baby program, though it wasn’t running yet during our stay. All of this happens in the “Istrian Village”, a charming little cluster of small houses just steps from the main hotel area, each serving a different purpose: one for Pepi Club, one for babies, one as a gym, one as a restaurant, and so on.

Near the village, there’s a large outdoor playground the kids loved. My one tip here is to visit earlier in the morning or later in the evening, since it sits in direct sunlight most of the day. We found our rhythm using it after mini disco each night.

Mini disco runs for about 30 minutes every evening and was a highlight for the kids, capped off with the Pepi mascot coming out on stage to sing the Pepi song, a moment my daughter looked forward to daily. Overall, I was happy with the program, though I did notice a few small things that could be improved. I’ll get into those gently in the next section.

Adult downtime

Unfortunately, the spa, indoor pool, and gym weren’t open yet during our stay. That said, we still had a relaxing time around the outdoor pools, with a good range of comfortable sunbeds available.

What could be improved

A few honest notes here worth knowing if you’re booking a stay shortly after a hotel post-renovation reopens.

Our first day had a small moment of mixed signals that I think is worth sharing. When we asked at reception about the animation program, we were told it wasn’t running yet, but that it would hopefully start the next day.

We were a little disappointed, but genuinely fine with waiting. Renovations run behind schedule sometimes, and that’s understandable.

Shortly after, though, we happened to run into a cleaning staff member and asked her the same question, just out of curiosity about the next day’s schedule. She told us there was actually an animation session happening right then, on the restaurant terrace in the Istrian Village.

It turned out fine in the end, we simply headed over and joined in, but it did leave me with the impression that communication between departments wasn’t fully in sync yet.

We also noticed new animation team members arriving throughout our stay, which makes sense for a program still finding its footing. But it did mean the information we received sometimes shifted from one day to the next: how a particular activity worked, what the rules were for certain age groups, that sort of thing. It felt like some of these details were still being worked out in real time rather than firmly established.

My gentle take, both as a parent and from my years in early childhood education: a bit of flexibility is completely normal right after a renovation, and I don’t hold that against the hotel at all.

But this is a hotel that’s been operating for years, not a brand-new property finding its identity, so I did expect a slightly more settled set of ground rules for something as central to a family stay as the kids animation program.

None of this affected how much our kids enjoyed themselves, and it certainly wouldn’t stop us from returning. But if you’re booking close to a reopening date, it’s worth going in with a bit of patience and flexibility built into your expectations, just in case.

Final Thoughts: Wrapping Up Our Istrian Escape

Overall, our four nights at Hotel Garden Istra gave us exactly what we needed: a relaxing, low-stress coastal break with plenty to keep a toddler and a 6-year-old happily entertained. Despite a few minor post-renovation teething issues, the shaded pool areas, kid-friendly dining perks, and gentle beach path made it a very manageable stay for a pregnant mom with two little ones.
